A Canadian business address is a role, not a magic label
A business may need an address to register an entity, receive government correspondence, keep a home address out of routine business mail, or prepare an application for a bank or payment platform. Those are different purposes. A registered office, a mailing address, a physical place of business and an owner's residential address are not automatically interchangeable.
Quebec's enterprise register distinguishes the domicile of a legal person from an elected domicile used to receive documents. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) separately distinguishes a physical address from a mailing address. Corporations Canada applies its own registered-office rules to federal corporations. One location can sometimes serve more than one role, but only when the law, the form and the underlying facts all support that description.
| Address role | What it answers | Accuracy test | Possible use of 2727 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered office or Quebec domicile | Where the entity is legally recorded and can receive official documents | Does the governing law and registry accept this arrangement for this entity? | Potentially, when the relevant rules permit it and the service remains active |
| Mailing or elected address | Where correspondence should be delivered | Can the recipient reliably receive and act on mail sent here? | This is the clearest fit for a mail-handling service |
| Physical or operating address | Where day-to-day business activity actually occurs | Do people genuinely work, manage, make, sell or serve customers here? | Only if the business truly operates at 2727 |
| Books-and-records location | Where accounting or corporate records are maintained | Are the records actually kept and accessible there? | Only if that is the company's real arrangement |
| Owner or director residential address | Where an individual lives | Is it the person's real home? | Never; a commercial address service is not residential evidence |
For a Quebec legal person, the Registraire des entreprises describes the domicile as the head-office address. It describes the elected domicile as the address of the person mandated to receive enterprise documents. [1]
For CRA purposes, a physical business address must represent the actual location where day-to-day activities take place; the mailing address may be different. [2]
The practical rule is simple: describe the address truthfully. Do not call 2727 an operating or trading address if the business only receives mail there.
Civic address, private mailbox and PO box
A civic address identifies a street location. A private mailbox or unit designation identifies the customer's delivery point at that location. Canada Post says that when a unit number is assigned, it is an integral part of the address and must be included. [3]
Under 2727 Coworking's current operator service terms, the virtual-mailbox service uses a Montreal street address with a customer mailbox number. The published service terms include mail receipt, front-desk pickup and notifications, with scanning or forwarding available according to the selected plan. [4]
Those are operator service terms, not an assurance from a government agency or financial institution. “Not a PO box” does not mean “accepted for every purpose.”
For example, a federal corporation's registered office cannot be a post office box. It is the place where official documents are served, and it must remain in the province or territory stated in the corporation's articles. [5] [6] The CRA also excludes a PO box from its physical-address field. [2]
| Address model | What it establishes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Civic address with private mailbox | A deliverable street location and customer-specific mail point | Daily operations, residential occupancy or third-party approval |
| Canada Post PO box | A postal delivery destination | A federal registered office or CRA physical business location |
| Home address | The owner's residence when genuine | A separate commercial workplace or privacy in a public registry |
| Dedicated office | A workplace when genuinely occupied | Automatic regulatory, tax or banking acceptance |

Quebec registration and the NEQ
Most enterprises doing business in Quebec must register with the Registraire des entreprises. Registration assigns a Quebec enterprise number, or NEQ. [7] The NEQ is a ten-digit Quebec identifier; it is not the CRA Business Number. [8]
Before entering 2727 in a filing, identify the exact field:
- For the domicile or registered office of a legal person, confirm that the entity's governing law and registry permit the arrangement.
- For an elected or mailing address, confirm who will receive documents and act on them.
- For an establishment, do not list a location where the enterprise conducts no real activity.
- For a natural person's professional address, do not assume that any mailbox qualifies.
Quebec allows a qualifying professional address to prevent a natural person's home address from being published, but a PO box cannot serve as that professional address. [9] The enterprise register is publicly accessible, so address choices have privacy consequences. [10]
Registration also creates maintenance duties. Registered enterprises must file an annual updating declaration during the prescribed period even when no information changed. [11]
An entity constituted outside Quebec that has no Quebec domicile, business address or establishment may need to declare a mandatary even if it has an address for service. [12] A mailbox subscription should not be treated as a shortcut around that analysis. The non-resident guide explains the sequence and the questions to take to the REQ or a qualified adviser.
CRA records are separate from the Quebec register
The CRA's physical-address field is for the business or head-office location where day-to-day activities occur. Its mailing-address field may point somewhere else, including a location that receives correspondence for the business. [2]
In practice:
- Use 2727 as a CRA mailing address only when that is where CRA correspondence should be received and the account permits it.
- Use 2727 as the CRA physical address only when the business's real daily activity makes that statement accurate.
- Update the CRA directly when an address changes; changing the REQ record is not a substitute.
- Keep the legal name and complete address format consistent across registry, CRA, service and institutional records.
The CRA Business Number is a unique nine-digit federal identifier. Program identifiers are added for accounts such as GST/HST or payroll. [13] An enterprise may use both an NEQ and a BN, but one does not replace the other.
The CRA provides a dedicated registration route for businesses incorporated or located outside Canada. [14] A Canadian mailing address is only one part of that file. An address subscription alone should not be treated as determining corporate tax residence; CRA guidance describes residence through statutory provisions and common-law principles. [15]
Why KYC requires more than one address document
FINTRAC guidance requires reporting entities, including banks, to verify people and entities. A corporation's existence may be confirmed through records containing its name and address, among other information. [16]
FINTRAC also requires relevant reporting entities to obtain and take reasonable measures to confirm beneficial-ownership information. For corporations, that includes people who directly or indirectly own or control at least 25% of the shares. [17]
That is why a credible application is a stack of evidence, not a single “proof of address.”
| Question under review | Relevant evidence | What an operator-issued address agreement can show |
|---|---|---|
| Does the entity legally exist? | Certificate and articles, current registry extract or status record | Nothing by itself; it must be paired with corporate records |
| Is there a documented address relationship? | Current registry record and current service or workspace agreement | The subscriber, stated address and service period, if those fields appear |
| Who owns and controls the entity? | Share register, ownership chart, shareholder agreement and director records | Nothing by itself |
| Who are the applicants and signers? | Current government ID and any required residential evidence | Nothing by itself; a business address is not a residence |
| Where does the business actually operate? | Evidence from the genuine workplace and actual business activity | Relevant only if the business genuinely operates at the address |
| Is the tax file active and consistent? | CRA correspondence and program-account records | Nothing by itself |
Every institution applies its own document, country, industry and risk rules. It may request additional evidence. No address provider can approve an account on the institution's behalf, and this page does not claim that any bank accepts or endorses 2727.
Before subscribing, review the operator document guide and use the address-role and document tools. Ask the intended institution whether it accepts an address-service or coworking agreement for the exact role it is reviewing.
2727 operator service terms and their limits
According to 2727's current published operator terms, customers receive a Montreal street address with a private mailbox and mail-handling services selected by plan. [4] Review current inclusions on the virtual-mailbox overview and pricing page.
Treat any agreement issued by the operator as evidence of the service relationship described in that agreement. Inspect the legal name, complete address, mailbox designation, effective period, plan and signatures before using it. Do not treat an operator agreement as a residential lease, utility bill, certificate of incorporation, REQ extract, CRA letter or proof that employees work at 2727 every day.

Practical checklist
- Choose the entity and jurisdiction. Identify whether the business is a sole proprietorship, Quebec corporation, federal corporation, extra-provincial corporation, partnership or another form.
- Name the address role. Decide whether you need a registered office, Quebec domicile, elected or mailing address, CRA mailing address, actual operating address, or personal residential evidence.
- Check the official rule. Read the applicable registry guidance and ask the intended institution which documents it accepts for that role.
- Select the service. Choose mail receipt, pickup, scanning or forwarding based on operational needs.
- Review the operator paperwork. Check the name, address, mailbox, dates, service and signatures actually shown.
- Update each system separately. File with the applicable corporate registry, then update CRA accounts and private institutions as required.
- Build the rest of the KYC file. Add formation records, a current registry extract, owner and signer ID, ownership records, signing authority, tax records and genuine operating evidence when requested.
- Keep every statement accurate. Explain where mail arrives, where records are kept, where decision-makers work and where business activity occurs.
- Maintain the address. Monitor mail, keep the service active and update affected records when the arrangement changes.
Foreign founders should also check the Quebec mandatary rule, CRA non-resident registration, document certification or translation, in-person onboarding and cross-border tax issues. Start with the Canadian business-address guide for non-residents.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use 2727 in the Quebec enterprise register?
Potentially, but the answer depends on the entity, the REQ field, the governing law and the real facts. A correspondence use is not the same as claiming that 2727 is an establishment where the enterprise conducts activities. Confirm the field before filing.
Is 2727 a PO box?
Under the operator's published terms, the service uses a Montreal street address with a customer-specific private mailbox number, not a Canada Post PO box. [4] Include the complete mailbox or unit element consistently.
Does the address guarantee a Canadian business bank account?
No. 2727 does not approve financial accounts and cannot bind a bank or platform. The institution independently reviews the entity, owners, signers, business activity, countries, documents, source of funds and risk.
Can a non-resident use the service?
An operator may provide address services remotely, but that does not guarantee remote registration, tax treatment or financial onboarding. Review the non-resident guide before relying on the address for a larger setup.
Can I call 2727 my CRA physical address?
Only when day-to-day business activities genuinely take place there. If 2727 receives correspondence while the business operates elsewhere, the CRA mailing-address concept is more accurate. [2]
What can an address-service agreement prove?
It can document the service relationship and whatever address rights are expressly stated in the current agreement. It does not replace formation records, a registry extract, personal identification, residential evidence, a utility bill or proof of actual operations.
Can a business address keep my home private?
It may reduce the need to use a home address for some company-address roles. Quebec's professional-address rule for natural persons has separate eligibility requirements, so do not enter a mailbox solely to suppress a home address without confirming that it qualifies. [9]
What should I do if the address changes?
Plan the transition before the old service ends. Update the applicable registry, REQ record, CRA accounts, financial institutions, invoices, website, vendors and customers, and arrange mail handling during the change.
Choose the address after you understand the requirement
Use the address-role tools, review the operator document guide, compare Montreal address models, or see plans and pricing. If your main need is mail receipt, start with the virtual-mailbox overview.
2727 can document the operator service it provides. It cannot guarantee a decision made by a registry, tax authority, bank, payment platform or other third party.
